Held every 3 years, the beef expositions have become a signature event for the Australian Beef Industry and aims to facilitate and strengthen networks within the global beef industry.

Nebraska Cattlemen Tour to Australia Itinerary

April 28 - May 10, 2018


Depart on your flight from Omaha via Dallas to Sydney. Depart Omaha at 3:30pm to Dallas. Depart Dallas at 10:00pm with Qantas Airways on your international flight to Sydney. Cross the International Date Line. You will regain the lost day on the return trip home. Meals will be served on the flight.

Arrive Sydney International Airport in the morning at 6:05am. On completion of Customs and Immigration formalities you are met by your local Tour Manager and taken to your city accommodation. This evening your Tour Manager will give a brief overview of the journey ahead, prior to your Welcome Dinner at waterside restaurant in Darling Harbour – only a short walk from your hotel. Grace Hotel (or similar). (D)

A city and beaches tour this morning, taking in the historic `Rocks' area at the southern end of the Harbour Bridge, the fashionable Eastern Suburbs, and famous Bondi Beach. On returning to the city you are taken for a luncheon cruise on the magnificent Sydney Harbour. This afternoon is free for you explore the city on your own – perhaps a walk around the world-famous Opera House, or a trip to the top of Sydney Tower. This evening is free for you to find the restaurant or pub of your choice for dinner. Grace Hotel (or similar). (B, L)

Travelling north, you leave Sydney on the Newcastle Expressway, cross the Hunter River and turn westward into the picturesque high rainfall cattle country. Near Gloucester you will visit some leading cattlemen running large herds of commercial cattle and finishing them on high quality grass pastures. This evening you will check into your overnight accommodation. Gloucester Country Lodge (or similar). (B, L)

After climbing through the Great Dividing Range you will reach the New England Tablelands at approximately 3281 feet above sea level. Near the small town of Walcha, are some of the largest and oldest Hereford breeding herds in Australia. You will visit one such property for an inspection and discussion over lunch. In the afternoon you will travel west to Armidale where you will spend time at the University of New England – Australia’s leading rural & regional university. A seminar today will feature speakers from the Animal Genetics & Breeding Unit and the Agricultural Business Research Institute. After checking into your hotel, there will be a barbecue dinner tonight with some of today’s speakers and other local guests. Abbotsleigh Motor Inn (or similar). (B, L, D)

Firstly you will visit a leading Angus breeder very involved in the practical application of ‘Breedplan’, the genetic evaluation system developed by the Agricultural Business Research Institute of the University of New England. Later you continue through magnificent Tablelands Pastures travelling north on the New England Highway. Lunch is at the Queensland Wine Centre at Stanhope. This afternoon you travel north once again and visit a major Charolais breeding herd, near Warwick and then continue to Toowoomba, the principal city of the fertile Darling Downs region. This morning will be spent on the Darling Downs, a world famous cropping area that has becoming the center of the Australian feedlot industry. The visit this morning will highlight one of these feedlot operations, which is preparing cattle for both the domestic trade and export markets. The visit will be selected to show a variety of management techniques; including pen design and layout, ration mixing and handling, shade, effluent control and pad maintenance. Late morning you return to Toowoomba for lunch at Picnic Point – an escarpment atop the Great Dividing Range. You then travel east to Brisbane and check into hotel in the heart of the city. Tonight is a free evening for you to enjoy the laid-back life style of this sub-tropical city. Numerous bars, restaurants and steak-houses are all within easy walking distance of your hotel. After a leisurely breakfast you are able to wander amongst the Sunday Arts & Craft Market at Eagle Street Pier on the Brisbane River – very close to your hotel. Later in the morning you regather for a luncheon cruise on the Brisbane River. Enjoy the live jazz band aboard your paddlewheel showboat. At the conclusion of the cruise you will visit Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, where you will encounter Australian indigenous animals (kangaroos, wallabies, great variety of birds and plenty of koalas - this is a famous koala sanctuary) – and you will get to have your photo taken with one in your arms. Later transfer to Brisbane Airport for domestic flight north to Rockhampton, the Beef Cattle Capital of Australia and host city for the triennial Beef Expo. Depart 4:15pm on Qantas flight to Rockhampton arriving 5:30pm. Held every three years, the beef expositions have become a signature event for the Australian beef industry and aims to facilitate and strengthen networks within the global beef business. Transfers from accommodation to the Gracemere Selling complex, where the commercial cattle will be sold this morning as part of a prestige auction. In the afternoon you will be taken to the Showgrounds for the Official Opening of Beef 2018. There will be the ‘Country of Origin’ parade and an opportunity to get to meet and greet other cattle people from Australia and around the world! International visitors will be welcome at the VIP lounge. There will be a great variety of eateries offering some of the best beef in the world. There will be an opportunity to attend the entertainment activities in the showgrounds complex. Later return transfers to accommodation. Leichhardt Hotel (or similar) (B)

Also during the day, you will be able to participate in the specialist Cattle Trade Fair and the ‘Post Farm Gate’ Displays, seminars and workshops or make an inspection of local cattle properties or tourist attractions. International visitors will be welcome at the VIP lounge. This evening you will be guests of Beef Australia to the International Cocktail Party. There will be an opportunity to attend the entertainment activities in the showgrounds complex. Later return transfers to accommodation. Leichhardt Hotel (or similar) (B)

Early transfer to airport as required for flights via Brisbane to Los Angeles and home to Omaha. Depart at 7:40am on Qantas to Brisbane, connect and depart at 10:20am on Qantas Airways to LA, arriving 6:00am that day (you arrive earlier than you left). Continue on via Dallas to Omaha arriving at 6:15pm. Meals will be served on your international flights. (B)
